How to take care of your feet in diabetic patients

Good diabetic foot care is very important in preventing ulcers and reducing the chances of foot amputation. Diabetic patients with nerve degeneration or insufficient blood supply to the feet should strictly take care of their foot health as follows

  • Check your feet daily for scratches, cuts, blisters, bruises, changes in skin color, swelling, or open wounds. If you notice any abnormalities, notify your doctor as soon as possible. Also, check the soles of your feet.
  • Clean your feet thoroughly, especially between your toes. Dry your feet carefully by wiping or blow drying them. Apply oil or lotion all over your feet to soften the skin, but avoid applying it between your toes.
  • Cut your toenails straight across and file away sharp edges to prevent cuts.
  • Always wear shoes, whether inside or outside the home, to prevent foot injuries. Be careful not to wear shoes with pointed toes, high heels, holes, straps or no heel support. Also, avoid walking barefoot, especially on hot surfaces such as areas exposed to sunlight.

Do not use a hot water bottle or heating device to apply or blow heat to your feet.

Avoid using corn ointments, wart removers, or razors on your feet, as these can cause wounds.

Reduce or control your weight to be within the standard range so that your feet do not have to bear too much burden.

Quit smoking, which is one of the causes of blood vessels constricting and results in less blood flow to the feet, causing wounds to heal slowly.
